Patriot Time Update

This week in Patriot Time, students shared highs and lows that they experienced during Winter Break.  Students and teachers used this time to build relationships and highlight individual differences, as well as find common interests that we may share.  Patriot Times talked about resolutions and defined it as a firm decision to do or not do something.  Students then brainstormed ways that they could make 2018 an awesome year for someone else and came up with a resolution and a goal.  For example; a resolution to smile more and a goal to smile at three new people each day.  Ask your child what resolution and goal they created to improve 2018 for someone else!

On Monday students will develop their understanding of perseverance and why it is so important in our lives.  Students will begin by learning about famous failures.  Click on this link to view the video on the famous people they will hear about.  Next week you can ask your child which famous failure stood out the most to him or her.  Students will then learn how to persevere through the following 4 steps:

1. Staying with the task and not giving up.
2. Showing commitment, pride, and a positive attitude in completing tasks.
3. Trying again and again and again.
4. Being patient and willing to work hard.

Library Books

In an attempt to keep school library books circulating for all students, all overdue library books will now be charged a daily late fee of $.05 beginning January 8, 2018. Currently, library books check out for two weeks at a time and students are able to renew the books several times; however, we are seeing a large increase in the number of late, damaged and lost books this year and hope this and other measures will address this trend.

Weekend Survival Kits

It is not too late to participate in the Weekend Survival Kits Supplemental Food Program. The program provides eligible students with several meals and one to two snacks every other weekend throughout the school year. Please remember there is no cost to participate in the program. Coffee Chat with Superintendent MacGregor

Superintendent MacGregor will host his second Coffee Chat of the school year on Thursday, January 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Crosswinds Aviation. Crosswinds Aviation is located at 3808 W Grand River Ave, Howell. Attending a Coffee Chat is a great way to hear updates on Howell Public Schools and engage in a meaningful conversation about the district.
