Parker Press for 6/8/18

Dear Parker Families,

As our year comes to an end I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of our families for the time, support, and encouragement that they have given to their students.  Middle school can be a difficult time for students as they are figuring out who they are, where they fit in the world, and how to navigate friendships and hurdles. Your guidance and support means more than you know, even if they don’t show it.  To our 8th grade families, thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of your child’s growth and development. We will miss this class and wish them all the best on their new journey.

Patriot Time

Students took the third and final Patriot Time survey.  We appreciate the honest survey feedback from all the participants.  Based on the students input there have been three consistent strengths on each of the three surveys throughout the year.  These three strengths were, Patriot Time has helped me feel better about attending Parker Middle School; Patriot Time has helped me understand the importance of being kind; and Patriot Time has helped me understand the importance of developing positive habits and growth mindset.  Students had the option of answering a short response question on their favorite part of Patriot Time. Of all the students that participated, 77% of students commented on relationships that were made either among students or among students and staff. 50% of the students mentioned participating in activities as their favorite part.  An opportunity for growth, based on the collective student survey results, is helping students understand their own unique strengths and characteristics. We look forward to improving in this area in the fall. Thank you for your continued support of Patriot Time. Ask your child what their favorite part of Patriot Time was this year.

 Class Highlights

  • Aerospace:  Students are finishing up their projects and will be presenting it in a Shark Tank type scenario.  What a fun way to end the year!
  • Energy & Environment: Students have researched fossil fuels and alternative energy sources.  They will be presenting the “best” solution to the problem next week!
  • Teen Leadership:  Students are currently creating a cheer, chant, song, or rap about “IPOSSESS” leadership qualities.  These letters stand for: Interpersonal SkillsPersistenceOptimism, Self-AwarenessSelf ControlEmpathySocial Skills, and Self Motivation.Having learned about each trait, students are now working in groups to create their performances.  They can either do a “live show”, or present a recorded performance, in class on Monday, 6/11, for their peers.  It has been amazing to see their collaboration and creativity, as they work to showcase their knowledge on these important concepts.
  • Careers, Money, and More: Students are writing children’s books about things they’ve learned in class. Topics include wants vs. needs, saving money, and finding careers. The students are writing and illustrating their books and will presenting them to their classmates on Monday.
  • Write On: Students researched 9 Minute to Win It Games, figured out what supplies were needed and helped type directions for each game.  Students will be participating next week to compete and see if they can complete the challenge in a minute or less.
