Parker Press for 9/7/18

Parker Families,

It was so wonderful to see so many parents and students last night at Open House.  We know how busy our families are and we appreciate the attendance of those that could make it.  If your student is in 6th or 7th grade you noticed that your student is on a team. What this means is that they have the same core teachers (Math, Science, English, and Social Studies).  There are about 115 students on a team. So they do not necessarily have all the same students in the same classes but they share the same teachers. We have more students than we have room on these two teams.  Therefore there is one cohort in each grade level that travels to their core classes together. We have created teams at this level so that we are able to create smaller “schools” within our larger schools. The team teachers have planning time together and meet bi-weekly with administrators and counselors to discuss the needs of their teams and assist with students who need more help.  We hope that this will help us meet the needs of all of our students.

Positivity Project

If you were able to making it to your child’s Patriot Time at Open House you heard a little about the Positivity Project that we will be launching Tuesday.  We are very excited to have conversations about positive psychology, character strengths, and the other people matter mindset. If you missed Open House you can access the presentationhere to find out more about it.

5K

On Saturday, October 6th at 9am we will be hosting our Second Annual Parker Pride 5K.  This is a fundraiser to raise money for field trips, additional classroom resources, enrichment programs, and positive behavior rewards.  The registration fee is $25 and includes a t-shirt. We would love to see as many Parker Patriots out there with their families and community members.  If you are looking to help we are still in need of community sponsors. For $150 a sponsor can have their logo on the back of every t-shirt. We are also in need of prizes for the winners and volunteers.  Below is the website to register, the sponsorship letter, and the flyer. Please share with your families or on social media so we can have the best turn out possible. If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact the main office.  Thank you in advance for your support.

1:1 Chromebooks

As you have read in my previous communications we are getting ready to distribute chromebooks to our students in the upcoming weeks.  See the schedule below. Before a student can receive their chromebook you must complete the online form confirming you have reviewed the documents and made a decision regarding insurance.  In addition the insurance or deposit must be turned in. The insurance is outlined in the Student Mobile Device Handbook.  I have had several questions on the two options so I thought I would break them down.

Option 1:

-Pay a $20 annual fee for insurance

-See the deductible claim table below

-If a repair is less than the deductible you will pay the lower amount

Annual

Insurance Fee

Deductible Claim #1

Deductible Claim #2

Deductible Claim #3

$20

$10

$40

$60

Option 2:

-If you do not want the insurance you must place a refundable deposit of $200 for the device.

-The cost of any damage will be subtracted from the deposit

-There are no deductibles because this is in lieu of insurance

Students will be issued chromebooks following the schedule below:

  • 8th grade distribution: 4th week of school (week of 9/17)

  • 7th grade distribution: 5th week of school (week of 9/24)

  • 6th grade distribution: 6th week of school (week of 10/1)

Students will have the opportunity to utilize Patriot Time to engage in discussions regarding expectations for their chromebooks and their responsibility as digital students.  We are excited about the new opportunities the devices will bring for both students and teachers.

The Hive

The Hive is a Teen Center located in downtown Howell.  The center offers many different programs and also a safe place for teens to hang out.  With the $20 membership you can also have a free LETS bus ride from Parker after school to the Hive.  We will be offering some tutoring opportunities at the Hive that we will be announcing soon. For more information check out the Hive flyer.

PTO Meeting

Our first PTO meeting is this Tuesday (9/11) in the Commons from 3:30-4:30pm.  Mr. McGregor will be coming to talk about the new Sinking Fund that will be on the November ballot.  More information about the Sinking Fund will be out soon.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Poelke
