Parker Press for 1/11/19

Parker Families,

Positivity Project

This Week:

The focus was on the character strength of perseverance.  Students participated in activities that they may have needed to use perseverance to complete.  Patriot Times completed an Eggsactly activity that you can try here.  They also worked in teams to do toothpick challenge puzzles.  Students discussed how failure can lead to success and saw many examples of this.

Upcoming Week:

Our focus will be on hope/optimism.  Students will engage in a variety of activities that help them understand the character strength of hope/optimism. Patriot Times will watch inspirational videos, think about their own hopes and dreams and create an inspirational space in the classroom that will help to inspire others.  Students will discuss optimism and pessimism then identify current difficulties in their life that they may find opportunity awaiting. They will decorate a piece of paper with illustrations of what they are optimistic about. Individuals will share their greatest hope for our school and discuss ways that they can work collaboratively to achieve it.  Individuals will create a Journey to Your Dream flowchart that will allow them to write out the steps they will need to take to reach their dream.

Home Connections:

  • Ask your child how far their group got on the toothpick challenge puzzle.  What happened when the activities got more difficult? Did their group persevere?  Why or why not? Is there anything your child would do differently next time?

  • Try the activities together:  Eggsactly      Toothpick Puzzles.

  • If your child’s Patriot Time completed the grit reflection quiz, talk with your child about where they scored on their personal test of grit reflection quiz.  What could they work on to increase their grit? You can take it together by clicking here.

  • As your child what their greatest hope for Parker is and how they can work collaboratively to make it a reality.

  • Talk with your child about their hopes for the third quarter.

  • Have your child share their Journey to Your Dream flowchart with you or create one together here.

  • Talk with your child about their best possible future self.  What things did they picture? What abilities and achievements did they have?

  • Discuss with your child how they can apply perseverance to their own life and what that would look like.  Share with them how you show perseverance in your daily life and examples of ways you see them persevere at home.  What might these look like at home and also at school?

  • Create a family image of things that you are optimistic about or difficulties that could be turned into opportunities.  What steps could be taken to be sure these become reality?

  • If you are interested in finding out how your character strengths rank so you can discuss with your student please take the free adult version of the VIA Institute Character Strengths survey by clicking here.

How to Restrict Your Child’s Chromebook Access at Home

We have received feedback from parents regarding their children being up late at night on their chromebooks doing non-academic tasks.  The technology department is providing parents with an opportunity to sign up for a time restriction on their child’s chromebook. If you fill out this formyour child’s chromebook will not have internet access between the hours of 9:00pm and 6:00pm.  Once the form has been submitted, the Technology Department will place the restriction on your child's Internet Account. You will receive a confirmation email once the setup has been completed.

January is School Board Recognition Month

The month of January is School Board Recognition Month. This is a time for us to show our year-round appreciation for our school board members and their dedication to our students. These individuals approach their volunteer work like it is a full-time job and, put in countless hours as they prepare for each meeting. If you see one of our school board members around town, please be sure to thank them for their service to our district.

No School Monday, January 21

Please remember that in observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, we will not have school on Monday, January 21, 2019.

Thank you School Resource Officers

Wednesday, January 9, was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. At Howell Public Schools we are lucky to have the support of two fantastic school resources offices, Officer Banfield of the Howell Police Department and Deputy Schuster from the Livingston County Sheriffs Department. Both Officer Banfield and Deputy Schuster work each day to ensure that safety of our students, while also building positive and trusting relationships with them.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Poelke
