Dear Parker Families,

Patriot Time

This week in Patriot Time students focused on the character strength of love.   Love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they're not around.  Positive psychology looks at love as reciprocal, not one-sided. Love is not just limited to romantic love.  Other types of love contained in this strength are: love between parents and children; and emotional bonds between family members, friends, mentors, teammates, or coworkers.

Next week Patriot Time classes will be focusing on the character strength of humility/modesty.  People who are humble are aware of their strengths and weaknesses and have an accurate self reflection of their abilities.  They are open to new ideas and advice.  Humility allows people to work well as a team giving credit to others and asking for help in their areas of weakness.

Patriot Times have been, and will be, participating in these discussions and activities.

Home Connections:

  • P2 for Families:

  • As a family, share qualities that you love about each other.  After, list at least one quality that you love about yourself.

  • Discuss where love is on your list of character strengths.  How do you show love with others?

  • How do you show humility?  Is it more difficult to show humility in certain settings or around certain people?  If so, why?

  • Challenge each individual in your family to complete the humility challenge.  Do something nice for someone anonymously.  It could be anything from picking up trash that isn’t yours to helping a neighbor shovel their driveway.  Try to complete the task secretly so you don’t get credit for it.

  • Where do these character strengths rank on your list?

  • If you are interested in finding out how your character strengths rank so you can discuss with your student please take the free adult version of the VIA Institute Character Strengths survey by clicking here.
